TRUFFLE HUNTER

When the only way to save their community from takeover by an automated restaurant chain is to recreate an ancient dish, two young men set out on an epic journey to reunite their families, and find a legendary desert truffle.

CHARACTERS

ANSELM

Anselm is in search of a home to belong to. Although raised in Canada, the childhood visits to his grandmother’s restaurant in Croatia were like an oasis of peace in a troubled world, and fired his imagination with dreams of becoming a chef. Since then, Anselm has watched his family slowly dissolve, and these dreams have faded too. Returning to his grandmother’s restaurant is like stepping back in time, to a home long forgotten. With her passing, it seems this home will be lost too — but this time he is ready to fight for it. Even if it means going on a wild journey with a Jordanian cook to find a mythical truffle.

HELENA

Helena Gabrek is the elegant matriarch of both the restaurant and the town of Samobor. Her presence always changes a room for the better, yet she contains a spirited playfulness as well. The war of independence took her husband Mario Gabrek, and she has watched her children move away and the once-famous restaurant fade to obscurity. Yet she remains in love with her fragmenting family and her community, and in many ways is the glue that holds it all together. Helena’s search is to find someone to pass on the Gabrek legacy to. She finds hope in Anselm, if only he can understand that the family must find its own, new way forward, without her. 

ZAYD

Zayd has a secret. He is much more than the Gabreks’ Jordanian dishwasher. He comes from a family of great chefs and truffle hunters — the same family, in fact, that used to supply the Gabreks with the fabled white truffle. Ever a dreamer, Zayd grew up hearing of his family’s storied past and feels the weight of responsibility to restore their forgotten legacy. What hurts him the most is that his family itself has forgotten it. And so he goes on a secret mission to  recover the lost recipes. At first Zayd isn’t ready to share everything he knows with Anselm, but as their adventure together comes closer to home, he ultimately finds a kindred spirit. 

CHARACTERS

DANNY

Danny at one time wanted to be the saviour of the Gabrek restaurant. He studied well, and approached the failing restaurant to fill a very needed gap, and become their lead chef. As it gradually became clear, though, that he would not be given the family’s secret recipes, something changed inside him. Despite his qualms about their practices, Danny approaches the Epox company with the desire to gain a favourable position in what he believes is an inevitable takeover. But his studies of the Gabrek history suddenly become very real when he sees Helena’s Jordanian dishwasher sneak a truffle into one of the recipes.

MARKO

Marko is the Gabreks’ stoic head waiter. He was Helena’s son-in-law before his divorce, and stuck around at the restaurant, even after all her children moved away. Marko gave up hope for the future of Gabrek long ago. Yet he sticks around for love of Helena, and his concern is to preserve her legacy. After her passing, he believes the best way to do this is to let the restaurant die in peace… until Helena’s Canadian grandson and Jordanian dishwasher hatch an outrageous scheme to save it. Despite his cold facade, Marko is that loyal kind of pessimist who will do everything he can to help a friend in a tight spot. 

SALMAN

Salman Abu Falah is Zayd’s uncle, the last of the Zelabie truffle hunters. He has been the lone steward of the white truffle’s secret location for many years, and has a special relationship with Zayd, who aspires to be his protégé. Salman is convinced that the truffle will one day come to the world’s attention again, and has made plans for that event.

FRAY SERGIO

Fray Sergio, like every monk, is an enigma. He is the town of Samobor’s Franciscan priest, and takes his charge of caring for the community far beyond the pulpit. Almost like a spirit of the earth, he teaches our characters the eternal worth of common things, and in so doing inspires them to daring feats that surprise even himself.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

In Wadi Rum, thunderstorms are powerful. They only occur in the early months of the year. The sky is darkened with clouds, the rumble of thunder is constant, and heavy rain sends waterfalls cascading down the sandstone cliffs. The next day, the desert valleys are filled with blue flowers and green plants called “rhalla”. And in valleys where there has been lightning, families go looking for truffles. 

This is quite a different picture than most people have of truffle hunting. In Croatia, at first glance, the picture may be somewhat more familiar: the wet trees, the dark earth, the dogs (or sometimes pigs), and the unmistakable scent. Yet the true truffle hunting happens in secret: in the dead of night, up forested mountains or into deep canyons, to locations and trees that only a truffle hunter knows. Because a truffle is a treasure; one beyond monetary value.

With Truffle Hunter, we are taking a subject that would typically be shown in documentary and treating it as a genre adventure film. It’s a story about families and cultures coming together around food – one of the areas in life where our differences are essential, and compliment each other rather than divide us. Yet Truffle Hunter’s themes run deeper than that. It is a story about traditional ways of life coming in contact with a globalized, and increasingly artificial world. A world where the efficiency and necessity of mass production challenges the soul of the hand-created. How should one move forward in this new world? What is healthy to hold on to, what to let go of, and what to fight for?

A truffle is only too fitting a thing through which to explore these questions. That mysterious fungi growing amid the roots of trees defies commodification by its very nature, just as it defies scientific explanation. You cannot farm them; you have to go looking for them. They are not eternal; each one is unique, and will never come again. They are small, dirty, and odd to look at. Yet what a truffle does to a dish of food is indescribable.

In Truffle Hunter our heroes set out on a journey in search of a lost species of desert truffle. If they fail, it will mean the loss of their communities to an automated chain restaurant which will mass produce this ingredient. Along the way they must overcome apathy, fears, and industry, not to mention the forces of nature. But throughout all these adventures runs the metaphor which I do not think will be lost on the audience: every person has worth. Every person is a mystery, and of immeasurable value. 

MALIBU TAETZ

DIRECTOR

Malibu Taetz is a Canadian filmmaker, composer, and actor whose works have been presented in a variety of places around the world, including the Vancouver Opera Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, and a performance by the KLK Orchestra in Lviv, Ukraine. He is a graduate of the Bachelor of Motion Picture Arts program at Capilano University (valedictorian) and the University of Hertfordshire. Malibu is also a co-founder of Leitmotif Pictures, a collaboration of storytellers working to blend film, animation, and music in unique ways. He is ever-hopeful about the good that stories can do in the world, and grateful for the extraordinary people he has the chance to collaborate with.

Before founding Nukleus Films in 2009, Siniša worked as a journalist, editor and producer on radio and television in Croatia and abroad.  Regularly receiving international film awards, Siniša’s accolades include a France 4 Visionary Award for Ilian Metev’s “Sofia’s Last Ambulance”, screened in 51st Cannes Film Festival, an audience award at the Berlin Film Festival for Peter Kerekes “Velvet Terrorists”, and the cinema tour of Anja Kofmel’s animation-documentary “Chris the Swiss”, which premiered in the Cannes Critics Week. A member of the European Film Academy, Sinisa’s focus is on producing films and helping talented filmmakers from the EEC to achieve their full international potential. 

ZAID BAQAEEN

PRODUCER

Zaid BaQaeen is a writer, director, and creative producer with a track record in film, television, and educational media. His notable achievements include a nomination for the Palme D’Or at the Festival de Cannes and an Emmy Award nomination for a TV show airing on MBC. BaQaeen has played a key role as Head Writer & Creative Producer for “Ahlan Simsim,” a Sesame Workshop TV show viewed by over 23 million Arab children across the MENA region. In addition, he teaches film production at the SAE Institute of Amman. Prior to this, BaQaeen acted as the Film advisor at the Royal Film Commission of Jordan. His academic credentials include an MFA in Cinematic Arts from the RSICA  / University of Southern California.

JOSHUA VANDERLINDEN

PRODUCER

Joshua is a creative, multitalented individual with a passion for storytelling. With a background in theatre, he honed his skills in the film industry, earning a degree from Capilano University’s Motion Picture Arts program. Throughout his career, he has worked on a variety of film projects as a producer, writer, and director, taking him to international locations such as Oxford, England and the Cannes International Film Festival in France. Today, Joshua is a co-founder of Story First and Slateworks Pictures, where he continues to bring his unique vision and artistic flair to the world of filmmaking.

DAVID MORA PEREA

PRODUCER

David was born in Mexico and immigrated with his family to Canada at the age of 16. He began acting in university theater while completing degrees in Physics and History, but soon, looking for new story-telling artforms, he found himself onset for a variety of short films. First as an actor but soon after as producer and director, David has fallen in love with film as a medium to tell meaningful and impactful stories. What David loves the most about film however is that it takes a group of artists, rather than a single individual, to create a piece of art.
